Russia's retreat from Poland, 1920: From permanent revolution to peaceful coexistence

The Battle of Warsaw of 1920 was once called "The Eighteenth Decisive Battle of the World", for it appeared to have saved both Poland and Europe from communism. But the Red Army's retreat was so surprising that many attributed it to a "miracle". Winston Churchill was forced to conclude that "a study of what happened leaves one still asking - why?". This work attempts to answer Churchill's bewildered query by examining such factors as Polish popular resistance, the Red Army's strategy, problems facing the Soviet Republic internally, British diplomatic efforts at ending the war and the transition Soviet policy was undergoing - from the concept of Permanent Revolution to that of Peaceful Coexistence.
