Description
"Intellectuals and the Future in the Habsburg Monarchy, 1890-1914 (Studies in Russia and East Europe)" -- In all the cultural centres of the Habsburg Monarchy, Vienna, Prague, Cracow, Budapest, the Fin de siècle was a period singularly rich in intellectual innovation. This volume contains a selection of essays based on papers given at a seminar series held at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London. The general approach is interdisciplinary: most of the essays concern the arts, but political and sociological aspects prevail. The authors treat intellectuals who are virtually unknown in the West, such as Justh or Karásek, as well as offering new approaches to figures as well known as Freud, Klimt and Schnitzler.
