Biomaterials in Artificial Organs Proceedings of a Seminar on Biomaterials Held at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in September 1983

The term "biomaterial" describes natural or synthetic matter that is used in contact with living tissue or biological fluids, mostly in the construction of artificial organs or of extracorporeal blood purification devices. Here, biocompatibility in the widest sense is the key issue. It is an interfacial problem of high complexity. This book presents 38 papers which describe research and development related to biomaterials and their applications. Topics dealt with include haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, haemoperfusion, plasma separation and interactions of biomaterials with tissues and blood. A new approach to wound healing, the degradation of ventricular leads consisting of polyurethane and silicone rubber, biodegradable glass material and calcium phosphate bioceramics are further subjects of discussion.
